異種間クロストーク＃９「日本アニメとアメリカ—文化と経済の意外な接点」
11月のアートウィーク東京の開催期間中に国際文化会館で実施する異種間クロストークでは、アートデザイン部門ディレクター・長谷川祐子のモデレーションのもと、世界的に注目されている二つの重要テーマを二日間にわたり掘り下げます。
11月5日のテーマは、日本のアニメーションとアメリカ経済の関係です。
今年アカデミー賞短編アニメ部門にノミネートされ、「プリキュア」シリーズをはじめ長く日本のアニメ制作現場を牽引してきた鷲尾天プロデューサーと、国内外の政治・経済・文化を鋭く分析するジャーナリストであり、音楽家としても国境を越えて活動するモーリー・ロバートソン氏を登壇者に迎え、変化の激しい現在のアメリカ経済と、その影響を受けるエンターテインメント業界の関係についてお話しいただきます。アニメーション制作の現場を知ることで見えてくる視点と、日本国内での動きだけでなく世界全体から俯瞰することで見えてくる視点がクロスします。これまで日本が培ってきた文化的資産をどのようにして守り、次世代に向けてどのように育んでいくべきなのか、お二人の対話から考えていきます。
ジャンルを超えた知の交流が、新たな視座とインスピレーションをもたらす2日間。日本発のグローバルな対話に、ぜひご期待ください。

【登壇者プロフィール】
鷲尾天（プロデューサー）
東映アニメーション株式会社 執行役員、企画部 エグゼクティブプロデューサー、製作部 部長。1965年秋田県秋田市生まれ。慶応義塾大学法学部卒業。三省堂、秋田朝日放送を経て1998年東映動画（現東映アニメーション）入社。2004年「ふたりはプリキュア」を立ち上げ、2008年「Yes！プリキュア５GoGo！」まで5年間プロデューサーを務めた。2015年からは統括としてプリキュアシリーズに関わり、現在までTVシリーズ22作品、映画33作品が製作されている。他に「怪談レストラン」「トリコ」「おしりたんてい」「銭天堂」「科学×冒険サバイバル！」などを立ち上げた。2024年に短編アニメーション「あめだま」を製作。世界各地の映画祭で7冠を獲得。2025年 第97回米アカデミー賞短編アニメーション部門にノミネートされる。
モーリー・ロバートソン（国際ジャーナリスト・音楽家）
日米双方の教育を受け富山県高岡高校卒業したのち、1981年に東京大学とハーバード大学に現役で同時合格する。日本語で受験したアメリカ人としてはおそらく初めての合格者。東京大学、ハーバード大学に加え、MIT、スタンフォード大学、UCバークレー、プリンストン大学、エール大学にも同時合格。東京大学を1学期で退学し、ハーバード大学に入学。電子音楽とアニメーションを専攻。アナログ・シンセサイザーの世界的な権威に師事し、1988年ハーバード大学を卒業。2018年に内閣省「COOL JAPAN」官民連携プラットフォーム総会 登壇、2019年には東京新聞 イメージキャラクターを務める。2021年から現在まで富山県氷見市 政策参与 任命されている。またドラマにも積極的に出演をしており、2021年NHK大河ドラマ「青天を衝け」マシュー・ペリー役として、また2024年にはWOWOW「ゴールデンカムイ-北海道刺青囚人争奪編-」エディ・ダン役として出演。2024年には書籍「日本、やばい。いいねとコスパを捨てる新しい生き方のススメ」文藝春秋 刊行。

長谷川祐子（国際文化会館アート・デザイン部門ディレクター、京都大学経営管理大学院客員教授、東京藝術大学名誉教授、 総合地球環境学研究所客員教授）
キュレーター／美術批評。京都大学法学部卒業。東京藝術大学美術研究科修士課程修了。水戸芸術館学芸員、ホイットニー美術館客員キュレーター、世田谷美術館学芸員、金沢21世紀美術館学芸課長、芸術監督及び館長、多摩美術大学芸術学科教授、東京都現代美術館学芸課長及び参事、東京藝術大学国際芸術創造研究科教授を経て、2025年4月より現職。ヴェネツィア大学客員教授（2023年）。犬島「家プロジェクト」アーティスティック・ディレクター。文化庁長官表彰（2020年）、フランス芸術文化勲章シュバリエ（2015年）、ブラジル文化勲章（2017年）、フランス芸術文化勲章オフィシエ(2024年）を受賞。
IHJ Cultural Lobby Interdisciplinary Talk #9: “Japanese Anime and the US Economy”
I-House will host the November edition of the IHJ Cultural Lobby Interdisciplinary Talk as part of Art Week Tokyo. Over two days, I-House Director of the Art & Design Section Yuko Hasegawa will moderate the program that will explore two globally significant themes in depth.
On November 5, the discussion will center on the ties between the current US economy and the entertainment industry, with a particular focus on how they impact Japanese animation.
Featured speakers will be Takashi Washio, a leading producer in the anime industry known for his work on the Pretty Cure series, and Morley Robertson, a journalist and musician whose incisive commentary spans politics, economics, and culture both in Japan and abroad.
By bringing together perspectives from anime production and global cultural analysis, the dialogue will examine how Japan can preserve and nurture its creative assets for future generations.

Speaker Profiles
Takashi WASHIO (Producer)
Born in Akita, Japan, in 1965, Takashi Washio studied law at Keio University. He began his career at an educational publishing company, later working as a news reporter for a TV station. In 1998, he joined Toei Animation and made his debut as a producer with Mr. Muscleman: Second Generation.
In 2004, he launched Futari wa Pretty Cure, serving as producer for five years through Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! in 2008. Since 2015, he has overseen the Pretty Cure franchise as a general producer, contributing to the production of 22 TV series and 33 feature films to date.
Beyond Pretty Cure, Washio has launched other notable projects, including Kaidan Restaurant, Toriko, Butt Detective, Zentendo, and Science × Adventure Survival!. In 2024, he produced the short animation Magic Candies, which won seven awards at international film festivals and was nominated for best animated short film at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025.
Morley ROBERTSON (International Journalist, Musician)
Educated in both Japan and the United States, Morley Robertson graduated from Takaoka High School in Toyama. In 1981, he became the first known American to gain simultaneous acceptance to the University of Tokyo and Harvard University via Japan’s entrance exam system. He also received offers from MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Princeton, and Yale. After completing one semester at the University of Tokyo, he enrolled at Harvard, where he majored in electronic music and animation, studying under leading authorities on analog synthesizers. He graduated in 1988.
He has since built a multifaceted career spanning journalism, broadcasting, music, and acting. In 2018, he was a featured speaker at a general meeting of the Japanese government’s Cool Japan platform, and in 2019 served as the face of the Tokyo Shimbun’s promotional campaign. Since 2021, he has been a policy advisor for the city of Himi in Toyama Prefecture.
His acting credits include NHK’s historical drama Reach Beyond the Blue Sky (2021, as Commodore Matthew Perry) and Golden Kamuy (WOWOW, 2024, as Eddie Dunn). His 2024 book in Japanese offering a guide to lifestyles beyond social media and cost consciousness received critical acclaim.
Moderator
Yuko HASEGAWA (Director of Art and Design, International House of Japan)
Visiting Professor, Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University; Professor Emeritus, Tokyo University of the Arts; Visiting Professor, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature; curator; and art critic. Hasegawa graduated from Kyoto University’s Faculty of Law and received her MFA from the Tokyo University of the Arts. She served as curator at Art Tower Mito, visiting curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, curator at the Setagaya Art Museum, curator, artistic director, and director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and curator and counselor at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. She has taught at the University of Venice (2023) as a Visiting Professor and engaged as Artistic Director of the Inujima Art House Project. She has been honored with the Chevalier and the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France (2015 and 2024), the Ordem de Rio Branco, Brazil (2017), and the Japan Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award (2020). She has also written, co-authored, and contributed to numerous books, papers, and catalogs, including New Ecology and Art: Anthropocene as Dithering Time (2022).
